Less known Solaris features in 2026

A few days ago, I looked at the archive repository that contains all blog posts since 2004. I asked myself whether I wanted to bring back all the articles from before 2021. I removed them a few years ago. After some thought, I decided against it.

However, these articles also include the “Less known Solaris features” series. And I thought this series was well worth republishing. The “Less known Solaris features” series is a document of great personal significance for me from a time when i was working for Sun Microsystems. So the republication also has sentimental reasons.

However, for various reasons, this republication needs to be preceded by a few words.

  • The republication of the tutorials reflect their state from March 2010. It is the state of the last published version from that year. This makes this version now 16 years old.
  • Some features and products no longer exist today or did not make it into Solaris 11. These tutorials are therefore of historical value at best, or useful to admins who, for whatever reason, still have to run very old Solaris versions.
  • On the other hand: much of it still works the same way or almost the same way today. So parts of the tutorials are still relevant even now.
  • Given the age of the tutorials you should be extra cautious when trying the tutorials on current Solaris 11.4 systems. Use a test system or a test VM for it.
