I feel obliged to point out that this blog post is roughly 4 years and 6 months old. People change, opinions evolve. In just a few years, vast technological landscapes can shift. And don't get me started on config files. Please consider this text in the context of its time.
Just saw the notification that Joerg Schilling, the creator of the cdrtools and Schillix (and many other tools), passed away this Sunday. He was one of the well-known persons in the Solaris community and will be for sure missed in this community despite (or because of) his sometimes strongly opinionated mails and comments. Rest in Peace, Joerg, your software will keep the remembrance alive for a long time.
