For a turnaround story in progress that might shine a ray of light for HP, just look at Sun Microsystems. Cash-rich but buffeted by Microsoft and the free Linux OS, Sun had some tough choices to make. Its server sales were leveling of--darn you, IBM and Michael Dell--and an economic recession was also damaging the bottom line. Sun is doing something smart: It is re-introducing itself to Wall Street and the capital markets. It's admitting that it has been overlooked but deserves attention. %u201CRemember us,%u201D Sun is asking. %u201CWe made the first server and workstation you ever bought and we have something new to show you.%u201D Sun is now working with the L-word and has made its Solaris OS interoperable with Linux. But a huge, bloated grid offering? Sun will leave that to IBM and Oracle. They have a dollar-per-CPU offering for those grid-computing projects, thank you very much.
