Pimp my system ...

Walter makes some interesting objections to optimization to optimization in “Computer tune thyself”. The basic problem is that most of the admins havn´t the knowledge to tune their systems as they get more and more complex. I´m able to tune hell out of webservers, mailservers, fileservers or other massively parallel tasks, but given the task to tune an SAP system, i wouldn´t wait a second to call Silke.
The next problem is time and the related costs of work: Is it more cost effective simply to buy an additional server or is it cheaper to invest the time of a knowledgeable employee to tune the application.
