Suitability for use

Paul Murphy discuss in his blog the ranking of the different operating environments: OS ranking - confusion to the nth. There are some remarkable quotes.

The problem is simply this: evaluate any Windows OS against Linux, BSD (including MacOS X), or Solaris on any combination of cost, functionality, and reliability and you end up predicting a zero Microsoft market share.

So what's the bottom line? There are two of them: first any ranking of multiple OSes is going to have significant subjective components, and secondly that I think it's fair to say that SUse 7.1 was at the top of its class but that Solaris 10 holds that position today.
