Activating 2gig pages on Solaris 10.

Giri Mandalika wrote an article how to use the 2 gigabyte page size offered by T4 systems on Solaris 10: "Enabling 2 GB Large Pages on Solaris 10". This can be really useful if you have an application allocating really large amounts of memory. The more memory a single page covers, the smaller the the translation tables from virtual to physical memory gets, the higher the hit rate of the translation lookaside buffer. However check out your application if it behaves well with such large pages.

How about Transparent huge pages like on Linux?

Having to pre-load a library and measuring dTLB misses till the right page size is found seems a bit… backward.

Is it possible that your knowledge about Solaris is a bit ... outdated? There are large page tables out of the box since Solaris 10 U1. Since 2007 when my memory serves me right. Without preloading libraries.

There's out of the box support for MPSS on Solaris 10+ (just like transparent huge pages on Linux), see https://blogs.oracle.com/mandalika/entry/solaris_disabling_out_of_the

"For example, if the heap size of a process is 256M, on a Niagara (UltraSPARC-T1) box it will be mapped on to a single 256M page."
